April 14/2014 – Poetry, 3-D Geometry, Science (Structures)

LITERACY -Poetry
We reviewed the rhyming poetry from Friday and talked about the difference between exact rhymes and “near” rhymes.

We worked on using the criteria and some feedback from conferencing to revise our poetry.

The pictures that we used Friday and today as prompts for our writing are from the Harris Burdick mysteries.

MATH
We continued our review of 3D geometry.

We practiced making our thinking visible (specific, step by step, etc.)

SCENCE – Structures
For science today, Mr. Obermeyer’s grade 5 students joined us and we did a think-pair-share in order to share what we know about how structures can be made to be stable. Using our background knowledge, we started a list of ways that structures can be made stable. We also brainstormed definitions for important vocabulary like “stable” and “load“. We also added words such as beam, foundation, anchor, platform and I beam.

Using just one piece of paper and eight textbooks, we were challenged to create a suspended bridge that could hold 10 plastic tiles. We will have more pictures and reflections tomorrow when we continue, but here are some reflections and observations for now:

“At first we put the paper bridge on top of the books and it stayed still the way we wanted it to. But when we added the load, the paper bent down. We noticed that we had to put books on TOP of the ends of the paper, too, so it would not move under the load.”
