LITERACY/Science (Flight) – Reading Comprehension strategies, Summaries

We’re focussing our reading expectations  on making meaning of our science texts (Flight).

Yesterday, I We did a modelled/shared summary of the first paragraph with these modelled steps:

  • read part of the text(eg paragraph)
  • read it again and think about it & what it means
  • COVER THE TEXT, and write what you learned from the text (without looking at it), including important main ideas, vocabulary and some details
  • go back a read the text again if you didn’t understand it

Our summary:

The summary has has important details AND the sentences are our own – worded differently (except for necessary science words) & even in a different order of information.

TODAY students wrote a summary of the SAME paragraph independently….as well as the next few pages from the text book.

We had a VERY productive work environment today!!!

MATH – Median (+ Mode, Mean review) — ALL are types of “averages”

We reviewed Mode & Mean and learned about Median in more detail compared to last year (some classes touched on it in grade 5). We focussed many of our discussions on “cause & effect” —- what happens to a Mean or Median when the data is changed? What kind of data (close together, spread out, etc.) is best described with Median? with Mean?

We even looked at “outliers” (a very large number or a very small number that doesn’t seem to match the rest of the numbers) and discussed how they can change the Mean and the how they can changed the Median.

We’re having a quiz on Thursday! It will also include Place Value/Ordering whole numbers.

Reflecting on finding the Median number in a set  of data

  • We notice it is easiest if there is an odd number of pieces of data (e.g. 5 numbers, 7 numbers 9 numbers, 11 numbers, etc.) because the physical middle is one of the actual numbers in the list
  • We notice it is more difficult if there is an even number of data….because the “middle” of the set is actually TWO numbers. To find the middle of these two numbers, we have to find the mean of those numbers (add the numbers and divide the sum by the number of numbers — or divide by 2)   if there is a small gap between the TWO middle numbers , we can add and subtract the same number to and from the TWO middle numbers
    • e.g.  If the TWO middle numbers are:   6   and 10   Then we can count up and count down the same number    6,  7,  8,  9,  10……..I count up two from 6 and get 8….I count down two from 10 and get 8. So then I know 8 is the median.

SCIENCE – Flight

We have learned a lot about how LIFT is created as the result of a PRESSURE DIFFERENCE above and below an airplane or bird wing or helicopter propeller.  we have made paper airplanes (previous post) and two types of helicopters.
