LITERACY – Writing

Students are writing speeches over the next week and a half. Students have chosen one of the follow:

  • Competitive Speech (Reading/Research mark + Writing mark + Oral Communication mark…….follows HWDSB Oral Communication Festival guidelines —- research is mandatory & ALL WORK IS DONE IN THE CLASSROOM)
  • Non-Competitive Speech – optional research  (Writing mark + Oral Communication mark) follows regular Ministry’s guidelines for assessment & evaluation —— anything marked is done in the classroom…….Reading/Research can be done at home as long as the end result is a point form list of facts/no sentences or organization….ALL ORGANIZATION/WRITING OF SENTENCES/PARAGRAPHS IS DONE IN THE CLASSROOM
  • Non-Competitive Speech – no research/just use background information  (Writing mark + Oral Communication mark) follows regular Ministry’s guidelines for assessment & evaluation —— anything marked is done in the classroom….ALL ORGANIZATION/WRITING OF SENTENCES/PARAGRAPHS IS DONE IN THE CLASSROOM

These excellent examples of point form notes were created by students at home who are researching & writing NON-COMPETITIVE SPEECHES. [Non-competitive speech writers who want to know more about their topic may read articles & books at home, bring back a list of unorganized facts (words & phrases, NOT sentences). They will earn a mark for writing in class (= organizing their facts into subtopics, writing a rough draft, revising and then editing their rough draft, publishing a good copy of their speech) & will earn a mark for their Oral Communication of that speech (oral communication practised in class & at home).]
