DAY 159 – May21/2015 – Energy (Gr5), Electricity (Gr6), Health (Substance Use & Abuse)

French & PhysEd

We began with French and then phys ed. If you are 5/6F student reading this blog post, feel free to comment in the comment section but something new that you learned or skill or strategy that you worked on our developed in one of these classes! 🙂

SCIENCE –

Grade 5 –

Comparing hybrid cars with regular cars, and planning our presentation. Thanks to our Instructional Coach, Mrs. Johnston, for joining us!

Following last week’s debate, the wind energy group writing a letter to Provincial government either in support of or opposed to wind energy

The solar energy group creating a Jeopardy game!

Our Hybrid Car group presented:

Grade 6 – Electricity

We experimented with rubbing balloons on hair! We understand the static electricity is the build up extra electrons on the surface of an object. It results from the movement of electrons from one object to another.

  • a positive charge on the object that lost electrons (the hair)
  • negative charge on the object that gained electrons (the balloon)

We rubbed the neutral/no charge balloon on our hair for a familiar result! (Thanks Isabel for sharing the electrons from your hair! 🙂 The resulting positive charge on the strands of her hair caused her hair strands to repel each other!)

We discussed & planned how to move/race empty soft drink cans with a balloon that has a negative charge….that will happen next week! Students are encouraged to collect aluminum drink cans if they can 🙂

HEALTH – Alcohol

Yesterday, we made a list of our background knowledge about the effects of alcohol on the body (in purple on the picture below). Today, students brought two additional facts that they learned either from their parents or something they may have read last night online. We added these facts to our list (also in purple).

We cross referenced our background knowledge with expert information provided to us by OPHEA (Ontario Physical Health Education Association). The way that we cross-referenced was as follows :

  • We read our personal copy of the expert list with partners
  • We compared the expert list to the list we made as a class — item by item.
  • We checked off (or highlighted) information on the expert list that we already had on our anchor chart
  • We added other expert information onto the chart paper that was missing (in blue).

When we were doing science today I learned a lot about our topic that my group was doing. The topic was Solar-powered vehicles, we each had our own paragraph to read and then make a web. After we finished that we decided to present it using jeopardy. It was especially great because we got to create questions for each others topic. To create the questions we had to read the other persons paragraph, so we learned about other peoples topics as well as our own. My topic was solar-powered cars. I learned that solar-powered cars move slower than regular cars because they have large batteries in them so if there isnt enough sun then the battery powers the car, they use no greenhouse gases, they have smooth edges and are more aerodynamic than regular cars and because they are slow not many people will want to use them.

  2. what I think I am getting better at in French is telling directions on how to get to different places. I think that it is heard because left is right and right is left since we are looking at the map. I try to think that a person is asking how to get to a place witch helps me know if its left or right. Now that I am getting the hang of it. It seems easer every day.

In French class I really am starting to understand the questions, like ou est l’aeroport? Which means where is the airport. And then I would have to awnser whatever street it was on. And also we are working on our own directions and everyone what try to guess where you are. And that is what I learned in French class.

In gym I was taught The rules of flappy ball. I also found out that flappy ball was the original approach to my usual four square! It is not extremely different but, flappy ball is a lot more challenging, for you only use one hand and the ball has to bounce in your square. The best part of flappy ball is that it’s very fair with straight on rules, and everybody gets an equal chance!!!

In French we have been working on giving directions! Today I learned something to help me save some time when giving directions! Here it is: Say, for example I’m giving the directions and I’ve gotten to rue Pug (that means Pug Road and yes, that is a name of one of our streets on our map we created) and it’s a vertical and straight street. (the map is on the wall) I’m at the bottom of rue Pug looking up it. To my right there are three streets, rue Chat (Cat Road), rue Soleil (Sun Road) and finally rue Dreaory (Dreaory Road). The roads go in the order that they were listed). Now, I’m still at the “bottom” of the road where rue Chat and rue Pug meet and I want to get to rue Soleil, to save time, instead of saying: Allez tout droite (Go straight) or: Prenez El rue deuxéme (go to second road) I could just say tournez á droite sur rue Soleil (turn right on Sun road) because there’s only one rue Soleil that connects to rue Pug, so there’s no need to say go forward because it’s the only rue Soleil that crosses rue Pug that’s to the right so there’s no need to say go to this specific point then turn because there’s only one! So as long as you can read, have the ability to walk, drive bike etc. a bit and understand this concept your good!
And like my classmates are saying, we worked on direction giving activities such as rolling a dye to randomly choose a question which the roller would then ask and choose someone to answer and we also worked in our little groups we made a few day ago to un-scrample some scrambled-up directions!
Well that’s what I learned an worked on in French today! I hope you enjoyed hearing my little concept that I learned and what I did! What did you learn today?????????????:) 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

In French today we continued to work on how to ask for directions or to ask were people or were places are. I think that this is an important skill to have because if you re ever lost in a French speaking community and you need directions… it would be good if you could ask questions.
As a activity to go with are learning we were given a sheet of paper with instructions on it, the thing was we hade to descramble the instructions to get the answer!
